Unsolved murders: Interpol seeks clues to 46 dead women in Europe

Lyon (France) - Their bodies were found decades ago, but their identities are still unclear: The international police organization Interpol wants to come a step closer to solving long-ago murders of women in Europe with a campaign.

Together with the German, Belgian, Dutch, Italian, French and Spanish police, it is looking for clues to 46 women's bodies in the "Identify Me" campaign, according to the organization based in Lyon, France.

Most of these women were murdered or died under suspicious or unexplained circumstances.

On its campaign website, Interpol has published facial reconstructions as well as pictures of jewelry and clothing found on the women.

Interpol quoted its Secretary General Jürgen Stock: "Even the smallest piece of information can be crucial in solving these unsolved cases."

The public could be the key to finding a name and a past and ensuring long overdue justice.

Interpol launched the campaign last year with 22 cases from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Around 1800 tips were received from the public. One woman was identified 31 years after her death.

There are nine unexplained deaths of women from Germany. The bodies were discovered between 1986 and 2002.

With the expansion of the campaign, three women have now been added to the list: One was discovered on a military training area near Hanover in 1994, one was found in Frankfurt im Main in 2001 and one in the Lahn-Dill district of Hesse in 1989.

Other cases from Germany include a dead woman found in Cologne in 2001, a woman discovered on the A6 near Heilbronn (Baden-Württemberg) in 1986 and a dead woman in Altena-Bergfeld (North Rhine-Westphalia) in 1997.

There are also reports of a dead woman found wrapped in a carpet in the River Weser in Bremen in 2002 and bodies found in the Spandauer Forst near Berlin in 1998 and near a forest near Todtnau (Baden-Württemberg) in 1997.
