As a result, two sandy beaches near Sydney in the town of Randwick have been cordoned off since Tuesday, as the local city council announced on Facebook.

At both Coogee Beach and Gordon's Bay Beach, "mysterious, black, ball-shaped debris was washed up" and discovered by the lifeguards. The material looks like a "dark sphere", they say.

According to the pictures, the washed-up balls are about the size of Flummis. It is not yet known what they are made of. Samples were taken and examined.

While the beaches were cordoned off, the city council expressed the suspicion that they could be "tar balls", which can form in the water as a result of oil pollution.

These small balls meant that the beaches had to be closed.

The objects were first discovered on Coogee Beach on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the city council announced that Gordon's Bay Beach was also affected.
