As the Slovakian press agency TASR reported, a 59-year-old man was reported missing in the early evening.

Rescue workers, local residents and relatives swarmed out and combed through a wooded area near his home.

After two hours, the 40-man (and woman) search party came across a gruesome scene: according to police spokeswoman Petra Kováčiková, the man's body was found in the dense undergrowth of the forest, away from normal hiking trails.

Investigators have ruled out the possibility that the 59-year-old simply toppled over while out walking. For good reason! Because the Slovak had "visible external injuries on his body", according to Kováčiková.

It is suspected that the man may have been attacked and killed by a brown bear. An autopsy should now provide certainty.

The state nature conservation authority (SOP) searched the area for brown bears after the body was found, but did not see any of the animals .

Signs are now in place to warn hikers of bears and protect them from attacks.
